Feel healthy and beautiful in your own skin

Juvéderm®

Juvéderm is a smooth gel, injectable filler made from hyaluronic acid (a naturally-occurring substance in the body) and used by our expert injectors to effectively soften those deep folds and lines that develop over time in the face. The official approval by the FDA for Juvéderm is for nasolabial folds, which are more commonly known as “smile lines.” In addition to the nasolabial folds, it is also very commonly used to enhance the size and shape of lips.

At the Advanced Dermatology and Laser Institute of Seattle, we provide Juvederm dermal fillers as a cosmetic solution for those looking to enhance their facial features and reduce the signs of aging. Dr. Greene is dedicated to providing safe and effective treatments, helping you achieve your aesthetic goals, and restoring your confidence. Whether you reside in Seattle or the surrounding areas, we’re here to provide you with non-invasive cosmetic solutions.

What is Juvéderm used for?

The primary use of Juvéderm injectable is to add volume back to your face. Over time, areas of the face naturally lose volume as a part of the aging process. By injecting Juvéderm into these areas of the face, we can smooth out wrinkles and folds by adding back that precious volume that has been lost. Juvéderm can be used to improve the following areas:

  • Marionette lines
  • Corners of the mouth (smoker’s lines)
  • Superficial forehead lines
  • Lip borders and vertical lip lines
  • Smile lines (nasolabial folds)
  • Nose shaping
  • Cheek definition
  • Under-eye circles, tear troughs
  • Facial symmetry

How is Juvéderm injected?

Juvéderm is injected into the skin to create volume, resulting in a healthy and rejuvenated appearance. Using a very fine needle in order to minimize pain or discomfort, our expert dermatologist will inject small amounts of Juvéderm into the area where results are desired. The Juvéderm injections create volume by filling your lips, wrinkles or folds, for a more youthful appearance. When injected into the lip, it can restore a more natural and plump look. This treatment is generally quick and simple. Afterwards, you may experience some very minor side effects, including swelling, redness and some tenderness. These side effects do not last more than a day or so.

Can Juvéderm and Botox be used together?

Yes. The mechanism of action for Juvéderm is different than Botox because Juvéderm adds back volume whereas Botox Cosmetic simply stops muscle contraction. These very different methods yield different results. However, Juvéderm and Botox are often used together to give you greater results. We use Botox to prevent new wrinkles from forming and Juvéderm to fill the ones that you already have. Additionally, studies have shown that by combining Botox (which minimizes muscle contractions) with Juvéderm, the effects of Juvéderm last longer. During your consultation, Dr. Greene will let you know if this combination will work for you.

Juvéderm vs. Juvéderm Ultra Plus

Juvéderm (hyaluronic acid) is currently available in two different versions. These variations are very similar, but it is important to know the difference. Juvéderm Ultra Plus is a thicker version of the Juvéderm injectable gel. The thicker gel provides more effective results for filling in wider and deeper lines on the face, whereas regular Juvéderm is meant for finer lines and wrinkles. So think of Juvéderm Ultra Plus as just a thicker formula of the original Juvéderm injectable gel.

When Will I See the Results from Juvéderm Treatment?

Juvéderm produces results immediately after treatment. However, results can take two to three weeks to set in fully. During and after this time, take proper care of your skin to help ensure the most pleasing outcomes.

How Long does Juvéderm Last?

Results from Juvéderm can last for six to 18 months. How long results last depends on the formulation used, the area that was treated, your age at the time of treatment, and other factors, including lifestyle choices, which can impact their duration.

Juvéderm results can be maintained through routinely scheduled touch-ups. Depending on your needs, we may recommend these at six, 12, or 18-month intervals.

Can Juvéderm be Reversed?

Juvéderm is a hyaluronic acid (HA) filler. Results can be undone by injecting hyaluronidase, an enzyme that dissolves HA.

Juvéderm is incredibly effective at addressing age-related volume loss and similar skin concerns. It is FDA-approved, safe for most individuals, and well-tolerated, making reversals rare. However, while reversal is rare, we are dedicated to the health and happiness of each patient we see and offer the service as needed.

Does Juvéderm Require a Recovery Period?

There really isn’t any downtime following Juvéderm treatment. Some redness, slight swelling, and bruising are all possible at the injection site, but these should self-correct within a few days. While we may recommend taking it easy for 24 hours after treatment, most people can resume normal activities as soon as they leave our office.

What are the Most Common Side Effects of Juvéderm Treatment?

The most common side effects of Juvéderm are redness, swelling, and tenderness in and around the injection site. These things typically go away independently, but you can help by refraining from alcohol, sun and heat exposure, and extreme exercise within the first 24 to 48 hours of treatment.

More severe side effects, such as allergic reaction, is uncommon. However, it is always best to work with a reputable, experienced, and board-certified dermatologist like Dr. Steven Greene to reduce your risks for these types of complications.
