Double chins can be unsightly and embarrassing. Fat under the chin can be resistant to diet and exercise, and people who are otherwise fit and toned can still be stuck with stubborn chin fat that’s nearly impossible to get rid of.
If you struggle with a double chin, Kybella® could help you get rid of that unfortunate feature and improve your facial contour without the need for surgery or downtime. At Advanced Dermatology and Laser Institute of Seattle, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Steven Greene and his team have decades of experience helping patients look and feel their best. We can help you decide if Kybella is the best option for you.
What is Kybella?
Kybella is a non-surgical injectable treatment designed to target and eliminate chin fat. It serves as an alternative to liposuction, an invasive surgical fat-removal procedure that requires anesthesia, incisions, and downtime.
The active ingredient in Kybella is a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is naturally produced by your body to help you break down and absorb fat. When Kybella is injected into the fat underneath your chin, the acid will destroy the fat cells. After your treatment, the obliterated fat will be naturally filtered out by your body’s metabolic processes.
Am I a Candidate for Kybella?
Generally, good Kybella candidates:
- Have excess fat underneath their chin
- Feel unhappy, embarrassed, or self-conscious about their chin fat
- Have chin fat that makes them look older or fatter than they are
- Want to eliminate their chin fat without surgery
- Exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet, but still can’t get rid of chin fat
You should inform our team if you have had facial plastic surgery or are planning to have facial plastic surgery. Doing so could negatively impact your Kybella results. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should wait until their child stops nursing before getting Kybella.
What is the Kybella Procedure?
Before your procedure, we’ll mark the injection sites under your chin and administer a topical numbing agent to help alleviate any pain or discomfort. Typically, you’ll need 12-20 injections per treatment, although some people get as many as 50 in a single procedure. The process should take about 15 minutes.
You should see noticeable results after about two to four treatments spaced one month apart. Some patients may need up to six treatments to achieve full results. Fat cells never return once they’ve been destroyed, so your outcome should be permanent.
Does Kybella Require Any Downtime?
You may experience some redness, swelling, and bruising around your treatment area in the immediate aftermath of your treatment. These should resolve within a week.
Other than that, you will not need to take any time off or make special considerations for your recovery. You should be able to jump back into your routine immediately.
