How Does Juvéderm® Work?

Woman Touching Face in Mirror
Juvéderm® is a dermal filler designed to temporarily treat signs of facial aging in men and women. Made with a naturally occurring substance, it smooths and plumps for results that can last up to two years. In recent years, Juvéderm has become increasingly popular due to its ability to achieve beautiful, natural-looking results with minimal downtime.

The Science Behind Hyaluronic Acid

The active ingredient in Juvéderm is called hyaluronic acid, which is also found in your skin. The main purpose of hyaluronic acid is to deliver nutrients to your skin that keep it moist, soft and hydrated. This substance also has antioxidant properties that protect your skin from the free radicals found in pollution and UV rays.

As we age, our cells create less hyaluronic acid, leading to facial creases and a dull, rough skin texture. Infusing your skin with the modified form of this substance found in Juvéderm can treat the appearance of:

  • Marionette and smile lines
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Lip borders and vertical lip lines
  • Sunken cheeks and temples
  • Thinning lips
  • Circles underneath the eyes

Juvéderm can also add volume to your contours, improving your overall facial symmetry.

Your Juvéderm Procedure

Juvéderm is a soft, gel-like substance that’s injected directly into your skin. To minimize any discomfort, Juvéderm can be infused with lidocaine, a local anesthetic, to temporarily numb injection sites prior to treatment.

Your Juvéderm appointment is quick and comfortable. Depending on which area of your face is being targeted, your treatment session will last between 15 and 60 minutes. No incisions or stitches are needed, and you can resume your normal routine immediately afterward.

It’s recommended that you avoid the following for 24 hours to minimize any redness or swelling:

  • Strenuous exercise
  • Prolonged sun or heat exposure
  • Alcohol

What to Expect After Juvéderm

After Juvéderm, you should see results instantly. While results are temporary, the effects can last one to two years.

Since Juvéderm is injected into your skin, you may experience mild injection site reactions. These include:

  • Swelling and bruising
  • Tenderness, firmness and redness
  • Small lumps or bumps
  • Itching
  • Discoloration

Combing Juvéderm with other dermal fillers, chemical peels and laser treatments can make your skin more sensitive after treatment. Let us know if you’re taking any medications, such as certain pain relievers, that could exacerbate swelling and bruising.

Juvéderm will be naturally absorbed by your body as your results gradually fade. When you visit us for repeat injections, you will typically need a smaller dosage than your first treatment.

Why Choose Juvéderm

Juvéderm is part of the world’s best-selling collection of dermal fillers. In 2018, Juvéderm, along with other soft tissue fillers, was among the top five minimally invasive cosmetic procedures in the country. Designed to treat lines and wrinkles caused by lost facial volume, Juvéderm can also be combined with BOTOX® Cosmetic for more comprehensive results.

Unlike surgical procedures, such as a facelift or brow lift, Juvéderm:

  • Is fast, easy and convenient
  • Is an affordable way to reduce signs of facial aging
  • Requires no downtime after treatment
  • Entails less patient commitment
